Independent Living Community is for older adults about 55+ that don’t need assistance with activities of daily living. The community is structured with various onsite amenities, socializing opportunities, and community offerings for the independent senior lifestyle. A type of independent living community would be a retirement community.
Assisted Living
Assisted living is a residential living situation for elders and adults with disabilities that need help with activities of daily living. Usually 65 years and older, that want to reside in a home-like setting, that need non-medical assistance.
At an assisted living community the common areas are usually shared. Some assisted living communities provide apartment style living, and others a room with a very small kitchen. Each establishment varies.

Memory Care
Memory care communities are geared toward long-term care of those living with Alzheimer’s disease or another degenerative dementia. Residence living here need more support than what is offered at and independent or assisted living community. Memory care communities are great for long-term care for advanced dementia clients who are not safe at home. These communities are structured specially to protect residents from wandering and self-harm, while still giving their residents great quality of life.
Skilled Nursing Care
A skilled nursing community is a temporary living agreement. These communities are also known as rehabilitation facilities. Commonly used for patients who have had a stroke, heart attack, or some sort of life changing emergency. If the patient needs medical treatment staff and therapies to get them back to their physical and mental abilities, the facility has them there. These communities are like a step down from the hospital.

Continuing Care &
Life Care Communities
Continuing care and life care communities are an all-in-one level of care that one may need throughout their aging journey. This long-term care option for older adults who want to age in the same place throughout the different stages in their senior life.
Due to being able to start off in this community as independent to gradually needing assisted living, to eventually needing skilled nursing and/or memory care this community can be expensive.
It does offer you a peace of mind to know that whatever stage your aging loved one is in they will be covered in this community.
Board & Care Homes
Board and care community’s also known as residential communities are non-medical alternative to assisted living. These communities assist your aging loved one with 24 hours of care and activities of daily living, but do not provide nursing or medical care. A lot of these homes are in a residential setting and look like any other house on the street.
They offer good staff to senior ratio and the environment is inviting.
